Substance Abuse & Addictions
By Nellie Cate Williams

Do you think you may have a problem with alcohol or drug use?

Does someone who cares about you think you may have a problem?

Are you using alcohol, prescription drugs, tobacco, amphetamines, cannabis, sedatives, or other substances?

 *******************************************************************************************

These questions will help…

Have you ever…?

  1. Felt guilty about your alcohol or drug use?
  2. Spent more money on substance use than you think you should have?
  3. Lied to anyone about the amount you use?
  4. Had someone suggest that you cut back or stop using?
  5. Passed out while using?
  6. Had memory loss during and/or after using?
  7. Found that you were using more substance to achieve the same feelings?
  8. Operated a vehicle after using?
  9. Lost valued relationships because of using?
  10. Suffered legal consequences related to substance use?

If you answered yes to even one of these questions please keep reading.

Substance Abuse is when your life is negatively affected in ANY way by the use of a substance.

Substance Addiction is when the symptoms of withdrawal and/or tolerance become present when a substance is used.

Substance Abuse and Addiction can develop for reasons that are biological, psychological, and/or sociocultual.  No matter what the cause…there is a solution.

“JESUS HEALED PEOPLE WHO HAD EVERY KIND OF SICKNESS AND DISEASE.”  Matthew 4:33

Don’t stop now…ask yourself 2 more questions…

  1. Do you want to do something about your substance use?
  2. What are you willing to do about it?

You have options for getting free from substance abuse/addiction that include:

  1. Outpatient Care:  This requires willingness to work toward personal goals, the ability to function in group and individual activities, and no need for medically supervised substance withdrawal.
  2. Nonhospital Residential Care:  This is appropriate when social, familial, or occupational functioning requires separation    from current environment and substance withdrawal is possible without medical care.
  3. Partial or Acute Hospital Care:  This is needed when daily support is required, there is a high risk of substance withdrawal (delirius tremens, seizures), and a concomitant medical or psychiatric issue might challenge treatment.
  4. Independent Care:  This requires a willingness to become involved in 12 step based recovery groups, obtain and use the support of group members, and work the 12 steps with the support or a self selected sponsor or other supportive and available person.
  5. Turning you will and your life over to the care of Jesus by reading His word, obeying His word, and using prayer to obtain the healing of the Holy Spirit while, perhaps, using any of  the 4 previously listed options.
